Sphere Animation Studio, has once again broken the boundaries of Imaging for the new talk show “Uncensored” for MTV.Base.
When Freddy Louw, Creative Director of Urban Brew Studios briefed Sphere Animation to produce the imaging for ‘Uncensored’ his instructions were very clear on the elements he required, but as far as the art direction and design was concerned he stipulated that there were ‘no boundaries’... All that was required was something stylish and different with design elements that subtly displayed the show’s main focus of ‘sexual issues’.
‘Uncensored’ is the new MTV.Base studio-based interactive talk show that encourages young Africans to talk candidly about the emotional and physical obstacles that are part of their daily lives; including love, sex and emotional wellbeing. Uncensored also seeks to explore and challenge stereotypes and social norms that relate to HIV and AIDS.
Armed with this information Nico Janse van Rensburg, together with Sphere’s 3D Artists, Ian Dehning, Ettiene Bosch and Gerbrand Nel designed and created imagery for the show with a slight retro feel. Staying with the main colour palette for the show, which consists of various shades of pinks, maroons and yellows (as per the Uncensored logo), two flowers (St Joseph’s Lilies) representing male and female were stylized to fit with this look together with other subtle manipulations like the pollen blowing from the flowers being characterized by the two sex symbols. The end product is a visual feast of 3D models crafted together in perfect synergy with the motion graphic design elements, while at the same time informing the viewer of the content of the program at hand.
Freddy, Cam Levin (MTV London) and the ‘Uncensored’ Producer, Kerry Gibbon, approved the motivations, ‘look and feel’ and all the graphic elements at the first presentation, and from these, Sphere produced the Promo Sequence, Title Sequence (Opening Logo), Strap-lines, Wipes, SMS Message Platform and other elements.
